The European University Institute Celebrates 50 Years: Half a Century of Research, Dialogue and European Vision
In the heart of the hills of Fiesole, just outside Florence, stands one of the symbolic places of Europe’s cultural and intellectual development for the past fifty years: the European University Institute (EUI), known in Italy as the Istituto Universitario Europeo (IUE).
In 2026, the EUI officially celebrates its 50th anniversary, a milestone that represents not only an academic achievement, but also a confirmation of the strategic role that culture, research and international education continue to play in the European integration process.
Formally established in 1972 through a convention signed by the Member States of the European Communities and inaugurated in 1976 with its first 70 researchers, the EUI was born from a profoundly European vision: to create an international centre of excellence dedicated to advanced studies in the social sciences and humanities, capable of training new generations of scholars, officials, researchers and public decision-makers.
Today, the Institute represents one of the most prestigious academic institutions on the continent. Its community brings together more than 100 nationalities, over 1,000 scholars and researchers, an international faculty and numerous specialised research centres working on the major issues shaping Europe’s present and future: governance, law, economics, international relations, migration, environment, digital transformation, democracy and public policy.
Among the EUI’s most important structures are the Robert Schuman Centre for Advanced Studies, which over the years has become an international reference point for policy-oriented research, the Florence School of Transnational Governance, dedicated to global governance and new European leadership, and the Historical Archives of the European Union at Villa Salviati, guardians of a fundamental part of the historical memory of European integration.
The celebrations for the fiftieth anniversary, officially launched on 7 May 2026 at the Teatro del Maggio Musicale Fiorentino, are bringing together European institutions, political representatives, academics, students, alumni and citizens through a series of events, meetings and public reflections dedicated to the role of knowledge in shaping the Europe of the future.
Among the main events is “EUIdeas: The Power of Knowledge”, a major public initiative hosted at the Badia Fiesolana, conceived as an interdisciplinary space for discussion on the central issues of our time: European security, climate change, academic freedom, migration, artificial intelligence, diplomacy and the future of universities.
It is no coincidence that the fiftieth anniversary celebrations coincide with Europe Day on 9 May. The history of the EUI is deeply intertwined with that of the European project itself. Born from the aspirations of the post-war period and the desire to build a continent founded on cultural and scientific cooperation, the Institute still represents today an international laboratory of dialogue, research and European thought.
In an era marked by profound geopolitical, technological and social transformations, the value of institutions such as the European University Institute appears today more central than ever. Europe is also built through the capacity to generate knowledge, dialogue and a shared vision.
Fifty years after its foundation, the EUI continues to represent not only an international academic excellence, but also one of the most concrete symbols of the very idea of Europe.
