Tesori d’Europa Announces the International Photography Contest: IN BETWEEN – EUROPE THROUGH CONNECTIONS

There is a Europe that is not immediately visible, that goes beyond geographical borders and official narratives. It is a Europe made of invisible connections, of contrasts that generate meaning, of relationships that cross cultures, landscapes, and identities. It is precisely from this vision that “In Between – Europe Through Connections” is born, the new international photography contest promoted by Tesori d’Europa.

Conceived by Riccardo D’Urso, as part of a broader project (IN BETWEEN EUROPE) that will extend across multiple artistic fields, the initiative is embedded within the cultural mission of Tesori d’Europa, which aims to strengthen the sense of European belonging and awareness through the stories, people, and contemporary expressions that animate the 27 Member States. In this context, photography becomes a universal language, capable of overcoming linguistic barriers and offering an authentic, shared vision of our time. At the heart of the contest lies a simple yet powerful idea: not a single image, but two photographs that communicate with each other. Participants are invited to explore the “in-between space,” a symbolic dimension where harmony and tension, tradition and innovation, identity and diversity meet. The goal is not merely to represent Europe, but to interpret it, capture its nuances, and transform them into visual storytelling.

The contest is free of charge and open to all adult citizens of the 27 European Union Member States, who are invited to contribute their perspective to a collective narrative. It is an inclusive and participatory call within a structured project, designed to guide participants through a clear and progressive journey over a total duration of 7 months.

The first phase, lasting 4 months, is dedicated to the submission of photographic projects. This is the time for creativity, research, and experimentation: participants are called to develop their visual diptych, identifying connections, contrasts, or relationships capable of expressing their personal vision of Europe.

This is followed by a second phase of 1 month, during which a qualified jury of Tesori d’Europa will select the most significant works. At this stage, the projects that best interpret the contest’s theme will be identified, standing out for artistic quality, visual coherence, and originality. From this selection, the 27 national winners will be chosen, one for each Member State.

The selected works will then move on to the final phase: 2 months of online voting, where the public will be invited to express their preferences. This represents a crucial moment of collective participation, transforming the contest into a truly shared European platform, where citizens’ perspectives become an active part of the process.

At the end of this journey, the 3 overall European winners will be announced, representing a recognition that goes beyond the prize itself, becoming a cultural and international experience. The 27 selected works will be featured in an international exhibition hosted in an exhibition space or museum in a European Union city, turning the contest into a tangible meeting place for diverse visions, languages, and sensibilities. Additional prizes will be awarded to the top 3 winners, including stays in European cities, offering them a direct experience of the continent’s cultural heritage.

All winners will also be featured in a dedicated series of episodes of WJTalk, the exclusive podcast by WJNetwork, designed to showcase the stories and visions of leading voices across Europe, Italy, and Japan. This represents a further opportunity for visibility and storytelling, allowing participants to share their creative journey and their interpretation of Europe with an international audience.

“In Between” is not just a photography contest, but a cultural project that invites people to pause, observe, and interpret. With this initiative, Tesori d’Europa takes another step forward in building a cultural platform capable of bringing together creativity, participation, and European identity, placing people and their perspectives back at the center.
